GIMP is a cross-platform image editor available for GNU/Linux, OS X, Windows and more operating systems. It is freely distributed and intended for such tasks such as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. The software is free and relatively simple, making it accessible to educators and students.

There are extensive plug-ins and third party additions available thanks to GIMP’s integration of coding languages including Scheme, Python, Perl, and more. The site includes various tutorials ranging from those made for beginners to more specialized tutorials in photo editing and programming. The user manual is available in 17 languages, making this resource accessible to a wide audience.

GIMP is best used in workflows involving other free software such as Scribus, Inkscape, and SwatchBooker.
