The Forensic Detectives is a weeklong summer camp that will engage students (grades 6 to 8) in the messy and meticulous world of forensic science. Students will get hands-on training in the basics—from fingerprints to DNA, toolmarks to trace—and get to meet with professionals working in the field today. The Forensic Detectives will be offered twice during the summer of 2016 serving twelve students during each camp. The program will be offered free of charge to twenty-four students who attend Title 1 schools throughout the District of Columbia. Participants will be selected through an essay contest held in the spring of 2016. The summer camp experience will provide participants with a greater understanding of forensic science, its role in the criminal justice system, and exposure to STEM-related careers in law enforcement.
