At the Exploratorium, the goal is to design tools for teaching and learning – they create their own exhibits in their onsite workshop in California. However, the tools they create for teaching and learning go far beyond their exhibits. From mobile apps to classroom activities, from publications to the vast riches of the Explore section, their teaching tools support educators and provide hundreds of ways to play and learn. For all ages, in both formal and informal learning settings, these essential tools spark curiosity, exploration, and understanding.

The Exploratorium pioneers new learning environments, programs, exhibits, and other tools that help people nurture their curiosity. The Exploratorium believes that research and evaluation are critical steps in understanding the nature of learning and in designing for learning innovation.

The Exploratorium’s Visitor Research & Evaluation Department (VRE) conducts research on learning in informal environments, largely in the public space of our museum. Our research studies address issues that have applicability beyond a particular exhibit or set of exhibits. Often, they explore how designs affect learning.
