Camp Invention is an exciting, week long summer adventure with activities that explore connections between science, technology, engineering and innovation. Local district educators facilitate the activities and enthusiastic high school students serve as Leadership Interns, ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children. Throughout the week, 1st through 6th graders rotate through various modules that encourage them to work together, seek solutions to real-world problems and sharpen critical 21st century skills.
The U.S. Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP), through partnership with the U.S. Army Engineering, Research and Development Center, established the Camp Invention Initiative to prepare underserved students at the elementary school level to be competitive for STEM studies and the AEOP pipeline of STEM opportunities. This program enhances a child’s ability to learn through teamwork, project-based learning, and subject matter immersion while cultivating an appreciation for discovery. AEOP ensures opportunity and access for those underserved and underrepresented in STEM; some sites offer individual scholarships, and some sites are fully funded. In 2015, Camp Invention impacted nearly 1,400 schools and served more than 94,000 1st – 6th graders nationwide.
Free to schools and organizations that host their program nationwide, Camp Invention features collaborative learning opportunities led by local teachers in a safe environment. Year after year, they offer innovative curricula that align with state and national education standards and meet their own rigorous testing requirements. They strive to enhance each child’s ability to learn through teamwork and subject immersion while providing exciting challenges and cultivating a new appreciation for discovery. The program is designed for children entering grades one through six.
