Missile Defense Agency STEM Education Development Workshop

Missile Defense Agency (MDA) STEM will hold its summer STEM Education
Development (STEM ED) workshop in the Bethesda/Silver Springs area from July
17-21. STEM ED is a formal professional development program for 4th-6th
grade teachers and informal educators. STEM ED begins with a week long summer
workshop during which educators explore STEM concepts in real-world contexts
and develop STEM-related instructional activities aligned with state
standards and rooted in research-based pedagogical strategies.
Workshop features include:
- STEM concept presentations and hands-on sessions with
- Educational excursions to museums and other attractions
- Demonstrations of STEM experiments and emerging technologies
- Discussion of research-based strategies for STEM instruction
- Standards-aligned instructional activity development
- STEM educational materials for individual classroom use
Following the workshop, MDA STEM professionals and university partners will
continue to support participants throughout the school year as they
implement STEM instructional activities. STEM ED participants accrue a
minimum of 45 professional development contact hours to count toward teacher
The program is free. You are invited to distribute the attached flyer to your
faculty and staff. Space is limited to 25 participants; therefore, we are
using an application process. First, a school principal or other
administrator must nominate faculty or staff using the attached Educator
Nomination Form. Second, each nominee must complete the attached Educator
Application. Lastly, submit all forms to STEMOutreach@mda.mil.
Application deadline is June 16. The event will run from July 17-21st from 8:30 am-4:30 pm.
