GLOBE I: GLOBE Observer (Clouds and Mosquito Habitat Mapper) (9-12)
A Summer STEM Teacher Workshop at NASA, Greenbelt, MD.
The GLOBE Program (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) provides grade level-appropriate, interdisciplinary activities and investigations about the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and soil/pedosphere, which have been developed by the scientific community and validated by teachers.
The activities are aligned to national and state educational standards, and can be integrated easily with the curriculum for virtually any grade level. In this workshop, we will specifically explore the protocols available in the GLOBEObserver app, currently Clouds and the Mosquito Habitat Mapper, as well as supporting classroom activities for both.
Clouds asks students to estimate the cloud coverage in the sky as well as sky color, visibility and cloud opacity, and identify the types of clouds they see. The data can then be matched up to NASA satellite data about clouds.
