Algebra & Geometry Institutes for Math Teachers

August 1 - August 3

Gear up for the new school year with the Algebra and Geometry Institutes by attending an intensive three-day content-based professional development course hosted by OSSE and Math Solutions. Participants can choose either the algebraic thinking course, or the high school geometry course. These courses are designed to help secondary math teachers and instructional coaches develop classroom learning experiences and instruction designed to support student success in algebra and geometry. These courses are appropriate for both middle and high school geometry and algebra teachers and math instructional coaches.

Algebra Institute – Aug. 1-3, 2018, 8:30 am – 3 pm

Algebra Content (Days 1 and 2) – This two-day course focuses on mathematical content involving algebra and functions for students in high school. The emphasis of this course is on strategies and tools to help leverage students’ ways of thinking so they can approach any type of function, work with it, and understand how it behaves. The course will focus on classroom discourse strategies, algebraic functions and their multiple representations. Coursework is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

Coaching for Success – Algebra (Day 3) – On the final day, the group will focus on the disposition, skills, and knowledge math coaches need to support teachers’ understanding and application of new content knowledge and effective instructional practices. Participants learn strategies to effectively partner with teachers in analyzing and reflecting on student data for the purpose of enhancing student learning.

Geometry Institute – Aug. 1-3, 2018, 8:30 am – 3 pm

Geometry Content (Days 1 and 2) – During the first two days, educators will focus on geometry experiences that formalize and build on high school students’ geometry work in elementary and middle school by utilizing more precise definitions and developing careful proofs. During the course participants engage in activities devoted to plane Euclidean geometry, both synthetically (without coordinates) and analytically (with coordinates). Coursework is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

Coaching for Success – Geometry (Day 3) – On the final day, the group will focus on the disposition, skills, and knowledge math coaches need to support teachers’ understanding and application of new content knowledge and effective instructional practices. Participants learn strategies to effectively partner with teachers in analyzing and reflecting on student data for the purpose of enhancing student learning.

Participants will be eligible for up to 24 professional learning units pending the successful completion of all three days. All sessions will be held at OSSE. Participants are expected to attend all sessions.

Register for the Algebra Institute or Geometry Institute. Registration deadline is Friday, June 22, 2018 at 12 p.m. Space is limited to 35 participants for each session. For questions, please contact Maya Garcia at Maya.Garcia@dc.gov.
