Janet Newton has been a teacher for nearly 19 years. Ms. Newton started her career as a Spanish teacher in Georgia, then moved on to teaching ESOL. Ms. Newton moved to Florida and taught ESOL for several more years. Eventually, she moved on to teaching Elementary Education at a Charter School in Florida. Ms. Newton and her family resettled in the Atlanta area where she continued to teach in an elementary school there. In Atlanta, Ms. Newton co-sponsored the Science Club and participated in the Elementary Science Olympiad. She also participated in an environmental education course through Oxford College of Emory University and received her elementary science endorsement. In 2014, she moved to Washington, D.C. with her family and began teaching reading at Turner Elementary in Southeast DC. The following year at Turner Elementary, Ms. Newton returned to teaching Spanish. This school year, she will teach both Spanish and Science at Turner Elementary.
